Today in Brussels the committee responsible for the Tobacco Product Directive voted to include an amendment that would classify all e-cigarettes in the EU as medicinal. This is despite very few merchants making any such claims and the EU’s own legal committee advising against the move on legal grounds. The news was broken on Twitter by Chris Davies one of the MEPs who is a proponent of the life-saving devices.
There is a chance this can change. There are still a few committees this legislation must go through and there will be a final vote in October. It’s possible it won’t be voted in. However, the more likely path is that it will get voted into law then challenged in court.
