In the wake of North Dakota's politicians actually trying to help keep its people alive by looking into harm reduction, prohibitionists are sort of freaking out. Groups and individuals are coming out of the woodwork to oppose examining ways to help smokers. Folks are taking to editorial pages and the airwaves to make harm reduction sound like a bad idea. One such person uses some pretty creative numbers in her plea on a local TV station.
The North Dakota Health Department is concerned by the industry`s purported claim that the e-cigarette is a safer alternative to smoking. Although there`s no tobacco, users are still taking in addictive nicotine and many users are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes.
“Some of those cartridges can have anywhere from 500 to 1000 milligrams of nicotine in them. And for an adult, 50 mg is near fatal,” said North Dakota Health Promotion Coordinator Kara Dodds.
Looking at my bottle of e-liquid here, I have 12mg/ml. The stuff you can buy at an average shop goes up to 24, sometimes 36. In fact, 1000mg/ml is 100% pure nicotine. If e-liquid contained that much nicotine, e-cigarettes actually would be as dangerous as these people claim since it would kill anyone who uses the product (or is in the same room).
